Thank you for your interest in the SMBA Senior Scholarship. This following information will help you understand the
selection process. Unfortunately, our limited funds make it impossible to recognize all applicants.
Applicants must be a graduating senior to be eligible for a SMBA SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP.
Applicants must have a minimum family membership to SMBA for the 2023-2024 school year by February 14, 2024.
Applicants/Family must volunteer a minimum of (5) hours at a SMBA event.
The recipients of Senior Scholarships will be selected from the pool of all applicants,
not by Area of Application or category.
1. All applications must be completed in full and returned to the SMBA Drop Box in the Guidance Office by April 17,
2024 or postmarked by April 17, 2024. Mail to: SMBA, PO Box 332, Sayville, NY 11782 ATTN: Sr. Scholarship
Coordinator. Or, you may email documents and submission links to info@smbasayville.org or directly on our website
by April 17, 2024, Or, you may drop forms off to the SMBA box in the Guidance office.
Failure to meet the deadline will result in disqualification.
2. All applicants had to be members of SMBA in the current school year with a minimum of a Family Membership by
February 14, 2024.
3. All applications must contain a parent/guardian signature.
4. Applicants may apply in more than one Area of Application, and if applicable, sub-category; see application for
areas/categories.
5. Applicants may receive only one Senior Scholarship.
6. If you are applying in more than one area and/or category, you must complete a separate application for each.
Separate letters of recommendation are recommended for each area and/or category in which you are applying.
7. Senior scholarships require two (2) letters of recommendation from people who are directly involved in your Area
of Application. (Example: a student applying in the category of Strings for a Senior Scholarship would request
written recommendations from the orchestra teachers and/or private study teachers.)
NOTE: We strongly recommended that letters of recommendation are NOT just copies of college application letters
of recommendation.
8. All applications must include the completed application, resume, and essay.
9. Failure to meet all application requirements by the April 17th deadline will result in disqualification.
10. It is the applicant’s responsibility to give the recommendation forms to the recommending teacher/person to meet
the April 17th deadline. Recommendations should NOT be attached to applications. All recommendations shall
remain confidential.
11. All Senior Scholarships will be announced at a future date to be determined.
NO PRIOR NOTIFICATION WILL BE MADE
12. All decisions of the SMBA Senior Scholarship Selection Committee are final.

AUDITION AND PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS
Audition and Portfolio reviews will be done by qualified individuals and scored. Scoring will determine scholarship winners.
Your audition/portfolio will be submitted online/via email, it is not a live audition.
Area: DANCE
Requirements:
● Two presentations of contrasting techniques.
● Please have selections memorized.
● Total performance time: minimum 5 minutes, maximum 9 minutes

Area: LITERARY Category: WRITING
Requirements:
● Submissions must be any of the following: poetry, essays, short stories, articles, or selections from longer
pieces (plays, novels, etc.).
● A minimum of 3 pieces and a maximum of 5 pieces will be considered.
● All pieces must be typed.

Category: BRASS INSTRUMENT:
Requirements:
● Two contrasting solos or movements, with or without recorded accompaniment.
● Total performance time: minimum 5 minutes, maximum 9 minutes.
● Please provide for the adjudicators copies of each piece you are performing

Category: COMPOSITION
Requirements:
● Two or three pieces will be considered.
● Your portfolio must consist of a copy of full, handwritten scores and a recording of the composition, along
with a completed copy of this form.
● On your recording, please include a short pause between compositions.
● Please do not include your name on your portfolio or any piece of writing you submit.
● Audition is a presentation of your chosen compositions and techniques and performance of 1 piece
(keyboard, other instrument, sound recording, computer generated, etc.)

Requirements:
● Submissions must include documentation of participation in technical theater in any capacity and any
venue.
● Submissions should include program credits, photos of sets/design, and any other production notes.
● Portfolios can be uploaded to our email or a link to your portfolio
● Please do not include your name in any part of your portfolio.

● Submit a portfolio of 5 pieces of your choice.

● Submit portfolio and explanation of the art pieces and techniques
